House of the Dragon Family Tree: How the Characters Relate to Game of Thrones

Alicent clearly suspects that Rhaenrya’s sons have a different father since she demands to inspect Rhaenyra’s baby immediately after the princess gives birth. The show heavily hints that the true father of Jacaerys and his siblings is Harwin Strong, the heir to the title of Lord of Harrenhal. Jacaerys is bonded to a young dragon named Vermax, and is betrothed to his cousin Baela Targaryen. Alicent is the daughter of Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans), Hand to both King Jaehaerys and King Viserys.

Prince Aemond Targaryen

Again, we presume his elder brothers Aelyx and Baelon died without heirs, but once is a coincidence twice is a pattern. Well, we can’t prove it, but it wouldn’t be the first time the Targaryens fought each other for a throne. After the death of her mother, Viserys named Rhaenyra as his heir, but the birth of his first-born son just a few years later leads to some disputing her right to the crown. Played by Eve Best, Rhaenys is married to Lord Corlys Velaryon, a member of King Viserys' Small Council. The granddaughter of the late King Jaehaerys, she was passed over as heir to the throne by the Great Council, despite being older, as the lords of Westeros didn't want a woman on the Iron Throne.

Prince Jacaerys Velaryon (Leo Hart, then Harry Collett)

Queen Helaena Targaryen is the only daughter of King Viserys I Targaryen and Queen Alicent Hightower. By the end of episode 8, Lucerys is betrothed to his cousin-once-removed and step-sister, Lady Rhaena Targaryen. Prince Jacaerys' younger brother is Prince Lucerys Velaryon, nicknamed "Luke". While initially keen to avoid war, the death of her second son Lucerys sees her heart steeled and war follows. Following the death of Viserys, Rhaenyra's half-brother Aegon is installed as King by the Greens. After this, and despite encouragement to wed Lady Laena Velaryon instead, King Viserys chose to marry Lady Alicent Hightower.

New British TV Series for 2024: BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Netflix, Disney, Prime Video, Sky

If you’re having a hard time keeping your Aegons straight from your Aemonds, your Baela and Rhaena separate from your Rhaenys and Rhaenyra, we’re here to help you out. We’ve put together a simplified version of the Targaryen family tree that focuses specifically on the generations relevant to the first season of House of the Dragon. Following the death of her cousin Viserys, Rhaenys is briefly kept prisoner by the Hightowers and their supporters but is eventually freed by Ser Erryk Cargyll (Elliott Tittensor). While many believed it should have been Princess Rhaenys and her children who were next in line, a council of lords chose to appoint her cousin, Viserys, as the next monarch instead. She is known as the Queen Who Never Was because her father, the rightful heir to the throne, died, followed by his brother King Baelon, leaving King Jaehaerys I Targaryen to appoint a new successor.

When Lord Rickard Stark arrived at the Red Keep, Aerys had him, and Brandon put to death and ordered that the youngest Stark, Eddard (Ned to you and me), be put to death as well, along with Lyanna’s betrothed Robert Baratheon. This was the straw that broke the camel’s back, and the North, the Riverlands, the Stormlands, and the Riverlands rose up in rebellion. Ever the diplomat, Aegon would have his daughter, Rhaella, marry into the Baratheon family to placate the Storm lords. Unbeknownst to Aegon, this marriage would later pave the way for Robert Baratheon to claim the Iron Throne, as he was technically a relative of the Targaryen family.

Daenerys

At the start of House of the Dragon, we see that King Jaehaerys I Targaryen (Michael Carter) summons a council to settle the question of who will succeed him. He is Daenerys' distant uncle and that might explain why her brother Viserys Targaryen ended up the way he did. Below are all the main Targaryens, Hightowers, and Velaryons in the series who are key players in the conflict. (Think of them as Daenerys' distant aunts and uncles if you're confused about the connection.) Some details are based on what is known to happen during the books, so there could be some deviation in the series, but it's pretty close.

King Viserys I Targaryen

He is the thirdborn son of Rhaenyra and Laenor Velaryon and younger brother of Jace and Luke. Luke is the second son of Rhaenyra and Laenor, and younger brother of Jace. He, too, was born out of wedlock as his real father is also Ser Harwin Strong. Tom Percival After graduating with an MA in journalism from the University of Salford, Tom set out to make a career for himself in the heady world of entertainment journalism. Despite Aerys’ death, his younger son Viserys and daughter Daenerys Targaryen survived and escaped to Essos. Seeing enemies everywhere, Aerys decided to further humiliate Tywwin by naming his son Jaime to the Kingsguard.

Sometimes called “Misery,” Mysaria starts out as a sex worker in King’s Landing but quickly becomes indispensable to her patron and lover Daemon as a source of information. Laena and Laenor have limited choices in their roles as heirs to the mighty House Velaryon. They each wind up marrying into the Targaryen dynasty — Laenor forms a marriage of convenience with Rhaenyra that allows him to live freely as a gay man under her protection while she pursues her love affair with Harwin Strong. Though he didn’t marry for love, he makes the best of it, and nobly claims each of her three clearly illegitimate children as his own. Later, rumor has it he murders his own brother-in-law, Laenor Velaryon, then married to Rhaenyra. Then he maybe seals the deal by murdering Rhaenyra’s lover Harwin, thereby successfully taking out both of his rivals for Rhaenyra’s hand, and marrying her.

Court Records[edit edit source]

Aegon called this prophecy the 'Song of Ice and Fire', and it was passed down through the generations, from each ruler to their heir. Aegon's grandson Jaehaerys was the grandfather of Viserys, Daemon, and Rhaenys. That means that King Viserys is the great-great-grandson of Aegon the Conqueror, and Rhaenyra is his great-great-great-granddaughter. The season one finale featured the shocking moment when Lucerys was murdered by his cousin Aemond.

But Viserys is uncomfortable with their huge age difference and has already set his sights on Alicent Hightower. After Daemon brutally murders his first wife, he weds Laena and together they have two daughters. Laena meets an unfortunate end, however, when trying to give birth to their third child.

It is the wish of Lucerys' paternal grandfather Lord Corlys Velaryon that he eventually inherits Driftmark and the title of Lord of the Tides. Despite being close to her uncle Prince Daemon, she replaces him in the line of succession. As of her son's ascension, Alicent is now Dowager Queen of the Seven Kingdoms. In the aftermath of Viserys' death, Alicent becomes convinced that she is the one to unite the Seven Kingdoms and seizes the Iron Throne for Aegon and has him crowned. Having been brought up in the Red Keep, Lady Alicent was already close to the royal family and was particularly close to the King's daughter, Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen. After Aegon's death, his son by Rhaenys became the monarch in the form of King Aenys I Targaryen.

As the King bled to death, Jaime sat on the Iron Throne and waited for the rebels to arrive, not knowing he’d be known from that moment on as the Kingslayerut it was more than that. With a slash of his sword, Jaime had ended not just Aerys but the reign of the Targaryen kings. In what became known as Robert’s Rebellion, the Targaryen dynasty did everything they could to keep the Iron throne, but Aerys’ madness prevented those loyal to House Targaryen from mounting a proper counterattack. When Rhaegar returned, it seemed, however briefly, that the rebellion was doomed, but at the Battle of the Trident, Robert killed the prince and, with it, any chance House Targaryen had of keeping the Iron Throne. Still, kings are allowed their eccentricities, and the realm prospered under Aerys, though some whispered it was Tywin who was the real power behind the throne. Eventually, these rumors reached Aery’s ears, and in the grip of growing paranoia, the King came to resent his Hand.
